Job Advertisement: Researcher in Radio Communication
The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analyses. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capability.
Would you like to work with advanced applied research and development in a dynamic workplace at the forefront of technology? Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!
About the Position
Our research questions are created based on military needs. We are not satisfied until our results have solved the military problem. Through rapid innovation and development, we directly contribute to sharper combat units in the Armed Forces. In our role as a research institute, we balance rapid interventions with more long-term research questions.
Our assignments require knowledge focused on wireless communication systems, ranging from antennas and analog radio technology to waveform in software-defined radio and functionality in large radio networks.
You will contribute your knowledge to applied problems related to radio-based communication systems. Depending on your existing knowledge, your role can be adapted so that your skills are utilized.
Our work is project-based in collaboration with other researchers within and outside FOI. Currently, 38% of us hold a PhD, with the ambition to increase this number. You will participate in dialogues with our clients and communicate results from completed activities. Our projects are relatively small, making your contribution a vital part of the whole, and you will have significant opportunities to influence project outcomes. You will have good opportunities to follow your idea from sketch to finished system.
Since we often verify our results in realistic environments with field measurements, it is a plus if you appreciate spending time outside of office and lab environments.
About the Unit
You will be part of the unit Robust Radio Communication, which belongs to the department of Electronic Warfare.
The unit covers a wide range of technologies, providing great opportunities for varied tasks. The military special requirements, such as jamming resistance, uninterrupted operation, detection probability, along with high mobility, differentiate our operations from those typically conducted by other actors such as academia and companies. We work with radio communication for military users at frequencies from 10 kHz to 100 GHz in close collaboration with clients from all parts of the military defense to ensure high connectivity in peace, crisis, and war.
Do you have the competence profile we need?
Requirements
We are looking for someone who has:
- A PhD focused on radio communication, communication theory, signal processing, electromagnetic wave propagation, or another area that FOI deems equivalent
- Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in both Swedish and English
We want you to be an initiative-taking, self-driven, and structured person with strong problem-solving and analytical skills. We solve our tasks together and individually, which means you need to be able to combine independent work with frequent social interaction with colleagues.
We place great importance on your personal qualities.
Meritorious
We often work with broad questions, so it is meritorious, but not necessary, if you have knowledge in any of the following areas:
- Wireless communication systems or radio communication
- Signal processing or machine learning for wireless communication
- Knowledge of civil wireless communication standards, e.g., 4G/5G/6G or satellite communication
- Experience with Matlab, Python, or C++
- Project management
- The defense domain, e.g., through previous employment, military service, military volunteer organization, or companies that supply to defense authorities
We want to make use of all your skills and interests, so please feel free to describe any other competencies you wish to continue developing with us.
